Don't Buy a Security System until you Read This!

» Discover 5 Traits every professional security company must have.

There are hundreds of security companies in the market all looking to capture your business. The question is: are they interested in you? You might hope so, but from my experience, most security companies care about what you can give them, not what they can give you. Many times, I find security companies "here today and gone tomorrow" and rightly so; these companies were either selling poor-quality product or never took the time to listen to their customers' needs. Below I've listed 3 basic criteria for evaluating a quality security company:
  • Takes time to listen to your security objectives
  • Provides quality products and installation backed by a guarantee
  • Dedicated service department with 24/7 response service team
When a company is not interested in providing these 3 basic services, it is easy to see why the longevity of the company isn't possible. Below are the 5 traits that make a standard security company a professional one:
  1. Security company longevity
I don't have a set number of years that makes a security company a good one, but a fairly new company can be your first sign of trouble. Check into the number of successful installations performed and their number of testimonials of satisfied clients. If you're investing in a large system, go to the company's location and consider visiting a successful installation. Ask to see a system that will be similar to yours. You don't want to replace a new security system for a number of years in order to receive the greatest return on your investment. Therefore, make sure the company you select to install and service the system will be there for you for many years to come.

  2. Ability to provide as-built drawings
If you are looking to have a new security system, consider how long you want the system to last. What is going to be the return on your security investment? One thing is for sure that without detailed drawings of the system design, servicing the system even for one year may be impossible and/or extremely costly.
When a company provides detailed drawings on how the system was designed and installed, you can be rest assured that they will be able to service the system for many years. Having a good set of drawings for your security system can be invaluable if you want to receive the highest return on your investment.
  3. Subcontracting of labor
All too often I hear about a company that hired a security company to perform an system installation, yet when it came time to install the system, a completely different company showed up to perform the work. When you go through all the time and effort to find a company, shouldn't they be the ones installing your system? Make sure you ask who will be doing the installation of your system and check out their certifications. Leaving this to chance can be a costly mistake.
  4. Manufacturer recognition and certifications
Make sure the company is an authorized dealer for the product they are selling; this means the company is certified to install the manufacturers product and have proven to the manufacturer they are capable of installing and servicing their products. Not using an authorized dealer who is certified on your security products can result in a voided warranty and a poor, typically unfinished, installation. Is this something you're willing to risk?
  5. Proven installation and testing methods
This can be as simple as a standard training syllabus that outlines the final system testing and training procedures for both standard users as well as system administrators. Without simple standards in testing and training, you will often end up with a system that is not used well or properly, and may not even work when needed. Simply ask to see a company's training guide or testing procedures for project completion. If they can't provide it, what do you think that means?
Summary
When a security system's company is able to show you all of the above 5 traits, you can sit back and enjoy having selected a security company you can rely on. By reading this, you have already found a company that can make that happen for you and meets all of these criteria.
